Creating a world-class museum for Hereford

Now that #StrongerHereford has secured funds and our projects are moving towards creating a full business case, we can start to get a little more excited about delivering these projects.

We’re currently working towards a full monitoring and evaluation plan so that the project management team needed at this stage is established and we all know what is expected to make these projects happen.

So we thought we’d start talking about the project themselves and to start with The Marches Experience which is a significant project costing £15 million, of which we’re contributing just over a third.

The Marches Experience is about creating a new museum in the city which brings together all our heritage assets under one roof. Most people will already know about the Magna Carta but we also have the Herefordshire Hoard and collections of antiquities dating back to the Ice Age. We want to host national and international exhibitions to keep it fresh and, of course, embrace the latest technologies such as virtual reality. It’s all about how we can tell the wonderful story of Herefordshire and the wider Welsh Marches region.

Why are we supporting The Marches Experience?

It was clear during our extensive consultation that you were as passionate about our city as we are. The Marches Experience is about embracing our rich heritage and presenting it in a way which is accessible to everyone. Right now we have an extensive collection which isn’t easily visible. This project sits well with the ‘Towns Fund Intervention Framework’ objective to improve our arts, cultural and heritage offer but in real terms, will also support our underperforming visitor economy.
